2009 Philadelphia

2009 Upper Deck Philadelphia is live!

The Upper Deck Company is blending old-time design with current-day players in its latest trading card product: 2009 Philadelphia Football. Featuring the retrospective card design from the 1964 classic Philadelphia football card set, Upper Deck has worked in special themes and top-name players in an effort to give something old a fresh new face.

“We thought it would be cool to go back in time and allow collectors to revisit a historical card design from yesteryear, but still have today’s players prominently featured,” said Brandon Miller, Upper Deck’s Football brand manager. “Retrospective sets are very popular nowadays and since there were so many newsworthy events happening in the 1960s, we were also able to include some very timely insert collections featuring the Vietnam War and Woodstock!”

The product boasts one oversized (5”-by-7”) 1935 National Chicle R311 card featuring current NFL rookies and stars in every hobby box as well as one hard-signed autographed card, on average. The company promises that boxes will yield “upwards of two” Philadelphia Fabrics memorabilia cards as well as randomly inserted original Philadelphia football buyback cards from the 1960s. In fact, many of the original buyback cards are autographed including the 1966 Philadelphia rookie cards of Hall-of-Famer Gale Sayers.

It’s not all football, though. Some of the historical inserts within this set are modeled after the original Philadelphia’s football release including “The Story of Barack Obama” (25 cards), which follows the earlier depiction of “The Story of Robert F. Kennedy” as well as “The Vietnam War” (10 cards), which is patterned after the original set’s “World War II” trading card essay. Other inserts include “Woodstock’s 40th Anniversary” (five cards), “The Election Years” (11) and “NFL Stars in Action” (49), the latter collection showing unobstructed, in-game action images of current NFL standouts.

Upper Deck’s 2009 Philadelphia Football set (eight cards per pack, 20 packs per box) is being released this week. Boxes have been selling in the $55-70 range. Over 850 cards, sets, boxes and cases are currently available on eBay.

Updates

Sorry everyone, I have been slacking onn the blog lately. So far the poll has UD Timelines at 100%, and I am debating to get either that or 2007 Masterpieces. I think that I will get Masterpieces or 2007 SP Rookie Edition. The logic is that for SP Rookie, I can buy one and my parents will buy one and I will have alamost a complete set. IfI get a box, I will open one pack a day and post results. Did anyone see the Fielder scuffle last night? Make sure to watch his inteview, it sounds so fake and he has a smirk on the whole time. Lastly, a few blogs to check out..

Budget Break

Yay, finally some pack breaks, not just news or infomation. Today we have 4 packs of 2003 Standing O Baseball. I really like this set for it has a clean design and cool inserts. The original price was 1.99 but I got them 3 for a dollar at a flea market. I found these while going through closet boxes and decided to open them. Here are the insert odds.

Regular Die Cut Parallel 1:1 [I love that, an insert in every pack, how many 4 card products have that today?
World Premeire- 1:4
World premeire Die Cut Parallel 1:48
Starring Role Jersey Card- 1:240
001002

Top scan shows base cards, bottom shows one base and inserts. Obviously, I got two inserts in some packs, which was cool. The baseball ones are neat because it is raised on the seams like a baseball. The World Premeire cards look nice but feature less than desirable rookies [Terreml Sledge and Rhett Johnson, who according to the card is "One of the top starting pitchers in the Mariners minor league system"]

More boxes and packs to come!

What box??

I most likely will get a box to open before school, and will get one possible before holdiays or every quarter to review. I will most likely get cheaper boxes, and my boxes will not get over $50 usually. This will be mainly “Budget Boxes”, I love Allen and Ginter, but don’t want to spend 90 dollars, since I only care about the base. These boxes are sets that I would like to complete. I would love to complete all the Masterpieces, but I want to start on a low price box to build the set faster. These boxes do come with hits, and some of them are mega deals.

2007 Masterpieces- 1 Jsy
2008 UDK- 2 Autos
2009 UDX- 1 Jsy
2008 SP Rookie- 2 Autos
2008 Timelines- 2 Autos

Plaxico Done

Plaxico Burress has been indicted by a jury for one count of criminal possession of a weapon and one count of endangerment. He faces 3 1/2 years in prison, but has pleaded not guilty to weapons charges and was freed on 100,000 dollars bail. Roger Goodell has started a investigation, but has yet to punish Burress. Plaxico was released by the Giants in April and has yet to sign. If he is convicted, he could be unemployed for a bit longer…

Peavy Traded

Just seconds before yeaterday’s trade deadline, the White Sox pulled off a blockbuster trade. They sent off young arms Clayton Richard, Aaron Poreda, Dexter Carter and Adam Russell to the San Diego Padres for Jake Peavy. Hnestly, I think this was a smart move by the Sox.They are making a playoff push and add a top of the rotation arm to the team. With so many “Can’t miss” prospects busting, the White Sox have made the move for the playoffs now by adding the 2007 NL Cy Young award winner. Peavy has been out since early July with an injury, but he is walking and running pain free, and wants to get healthy soon. Time will tell if the White Sox pulled off a good trade, with the ultimate reward a World Series.
